Chris Fullerton's digital split single “Ain't Blues Too Sad” / “Goodbye Sweet Dreams” is out now on Eight 30 Records! The rapidly rising Austin-based songwriter recorded the two Roky Erickson covers to celebrate the late, great artist's singular life and legacy. “I discovered Roky Erickson through the Okkervil River record True Love Cast Out All Evil,” Fullerton says, “and immediately gravitated toward songs like 'Ain't Blues Too Sad' and 'Goodbye Sweet Dreams.'”
The songs serve as a preview for label co-owner Brian T. Atkinson's forthcoming book Starry Eyes: The Songwriting Legacy of Roky Erickson (Texas A&M University Press, 2022), which shows the legendary songwriter's widespread worldwide impact. “I was experimenting with songwriting and wasn't sure which direction I wanted to go when I discovered Roky,” Fullerton says. “True Love showed me you can can take songs in any direction. Roky really was a guidepost for my songwriting.”
